Holko House, Day 8

Friday, July 10th was the 8th day of this project. It was also the crappiest day thus far. We had an appointment to go to the permit office and start the review of our plans. Ben took the afternoon off and he, Ken, and I went down together.

I had followed the city's guidelines in preparing the drawings and the two engineers on the project (Ben and Ken) had reviewed them and we thought we were pretty well prepared. Sadly,t he horrible woman who we were assigned to did not feel the same way. Without getting into too much detail and getting angry again, she basically saw that we were homeowners rather than professional architects. This meant there was likely to be more work involved for her, and she flat out told us that she wasn't going to even begin a review because there was too much to write down and it would be too much work. Nice. The information we left with was, "You're missing too much information," and "You should just hire someone to do this." Despite my best attempts to figure out WHERE exactly we could find this "missing information" we left very discouraged.

Since we basically had the majority of the information that she said was missing (and she just simply didn't feel like looking at what we'd presented), we figure it was a formatting and presentation issue more than anything else. Luckily Ben does technical drawings all day at work anyhow, so he can take all of the already prepared info, slap it onto a few big sheets of paper with a border around them and we'll take it from there. We've also got Ken's plans from their most recent remodel, so we can just pull a lot of the basic, non-specific information from there.

So as discouraged as I felt that afternoon, we still went to the rental shop and picked up a jackhammer.
