A Really Nice day

Sometimes you get a gift in the form of a great day. I got one of those on Saturday.

Saturday was the designated "bye bye rooster" day, as his crowing was in full force and there is no way the neighbors appreciated it. Our neighbors have called the city about a palm tree that hung too close to the sidewalk and an RV that was parked in one place for too long, so I doubt they would find much patience for a rooster. Anyways...the feed store said that they had a side yard and they would take him. I'm assuming that means that someone will come by and give him a great new home on a farm. I did not ask any more questions.

So, Saturday morning I woke up to Ben's anxious energy. Seriously, it was the energy coming off of him that woke me up. And then I heard the source of this anxiety. "COCK-A-DOODLE-DOOOOOOO!" It was not even light out yet.

Since it was clearly bothering Ben more than me, he got up to do something about it. His plan was to get the rooster in a box and wait til the feed store opened. Good plan. Poor execution. I got up and we chased the chickens around the yard for about an hour trying to contain the rooster, who was by then angry and terrified of the box.

We finally got him captured, and he started to CRY. It was horrible. He sounded like a little baby chicken crying. I ALMOST caved in (not that Ben would have allowed this) and let him stay. Luckily for us, he started crowing again IN the box and his fate was sealed.

Once the store was open and Jake was up, we loaded up into the car and got some breakfast on the way to the feed store. Everything went smoothly, and I'm sure Ruth aka Waldo has a great new home. Right?

Then we dropped Jake off at Ken and Susan's for the day. A whole Saturday, just me and Ben...

We went to Toys R Us and bought Jake's birthday presents and a Wii Fit game. Then, since it was still early, we went to the bay to fly Ben's kite! Just the two of us. It was really nice to just lay in the sun with Ben, to laugh and run around together.

THEN, we were hungry so we went down to the beach and had some delicious tacos while watching the crazy people and the surf. And since the tide was low and we had nothing better to do, we walked down to the tide pools to see what we could see. I LOVE the tide pools, any tide pools. There's something about jumping from rock to rock that makes me feel like a little kid again. Ben caught crabs for me and found a sea pickle, one of his favorites! I wish I'd had my good camera, but all I had was my phone.

Here's a little hermit crab Ben found. I kept telling him to get it closer to his face for the shot in the hopes that it would pinch his nose.

And then we went for a walk on the beach. I LOVE doing this. Ben thinks he hates it...but I think he might have actually enjoyed it. It almost felt like we were on a date. And that was nice. Perhaps we should do this more often...

We came home and I even took a nap. I NEVER do this, and it was lovely. When Ken and Susan brought Jacob home, they even brought dinner! Susan was feeling very sorry that we have not had a working oven for most of the week and offered to bring dinner to us. Sitting down to a nice dinner with family (Brett joined us, too) is a great way to end a great day.

So these are the things that made me happy (not necessarily in any particular order):
  • Ben
  • the Beach
  • the Sun
  • Jacob
  • Ken & Susan
  • Fish Tacos
  • Sea Pickles
  • Brett
  • Abalone Shells
  • Rotisserie Chicken from Costco
That's all for now...
